PE
As well as developing children academically, we feel it is very important to develop children’s skills in sports. Children will learn about keeping healthy and develop team spirit as well as providing opportunities for children to excel in a range of sports.
Physical Education is taught in school for 2 hours per week. We have sports coaches to teach some of the curriculum and class teachers use ‘Real PE’ to teach the other areas of the curriculum.
We use Real PE (by Creative Development) to support our PE curriculum. Real PE is a unique, child-centred approach which also develops thinking skills. We also make use of the our local sports clubs such as Birchwood Tennis Centre, Warrington Wolves Rugby team and Warrington Sports Academy to provide coaching and teaching to our children.
Sports Funding
Each year the school is provided with a given sum of money to develop sports across the school. See below for how we have used our allocation. For more information on how we spend this funding, please look at our Sports Premium page.
Swimming
As part of our PE curriculum, we take children in Y3 and Y4 swimming to ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn to swim. Many of our children can already swim and so they go on to do other strokes and life saving skills. For those who aren’t able to swim 25m by the end of the sessions, we use PE funding to enable them to have additional lessons.
After-school Activities
In addition to PE lessons we have a range of after-school activities which are based around sports and healthy lifestyles. We currently offer: Football, Dodgeball, Zumba, Netball and Gymnastics. Last term we also offered Judo and Cheerleading.
Competitive Sports
Our children have taken part in a number of competitive sports this year. We’ve had great results from our Netball and Football teams and we’ve also participate in Athletics and Hockey competitions. Every year we also hold our school Sports Day which includes individual and team races. We are proud to have achieved our School Games Gold award.
Playground Friends
Our Lunch breaks also include a range of activities which are led by our wonderful Playground Friends. They provide a range of equipment and organised activities for all age groups.
